Royal Wedding Costs Taxpayers More Than $40 Million

Millions of people around the world watched Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marry last weekend, probably never even thinking about who was paying for the grand affair.

According to this Page Six report, British taxpayers were responsible to pick up as much as half of the estimated $83 million tab for the royal wedding. Although the details of the funding for the royal wedding are shrouded in secrecy, the expensive road closures and security were paid for by local councils and taxpayer money.

Not surprisingly, many UK residents aren’t too happy about having to foot the bill. In fact, a petition was launched to stop the taxpayer funding. “A royal wedding is a private, personal event, dressed up as a national occasion,” read the petition (which had more than 30,000 signatures as of May 17). “Taxpayers should not be funding a private wedding, no matter who is getting married.”
