  • David DeStefano

    President, CEO, & Chairperson of the Board

    David DeStefano has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since 2016 and was appointed Chairperson of the board of directors in 2020.

    David previously served as Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Executive Vice President. Prior to joining the Company, he was Principal and Vice President at The Mid Atlantic Companies, Ltd.

    David is also on the Advisory Board for Corporate Social Responsibility at the Satell Institute and the Board of Trustees of the Joseph Fund in Camden, New Jersey. He received a B.S. in Finance from Lehigh University.

  • John Schwab

    Chief Financial Officer

    As Chief Financial Officer, John is responsible for the development of company’s financial strategic objectives, mergers and acquisitions, and international strategies for expansion.

    John has deep experience in leading global finance teams, developing multi-channel business models, and creating alternate investment strategies. Prior to joining Vertex, John was Chief Financial Officer at Flagship Credit Acceptance. John started his career in assurance services at Arthur Andersen.

    He holds a B.S. in Accounting from LaSalle University and was a Certified Public Accountant.

  • Jen Kurtz

    Chief Technology Officer

    Jen Kurtz is the Chief Technology Officer focused on technology strategy and product innovation. Jen leads the Office of Technology responsible for bringing together the technology vision, strategy, architecture, and capabilities required to drive breakthrough innovations that will propel Vertex forward in seizing new market opportunities.

    Previously, Jen served as a lead member of the software development and commercial enterprise architecture teams. Prior to joining Vertex, she was a software engineer at Verizon and Platinum Technology respectively bringing large scale business applications to the market.

    Jen has been honored by Oracle for Women’s History Month and Working Mother Magazine at their annual Working Mother 100 Best Companies event. She regularly speaks at local and national technology conferences and has an M.S. in Computer Science from Villanova University and a B.S. in Computer Science from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

  • Chris Jones

    Chief Revenue Officer

    As Chief Revenue Officer, Chris Jones is responsible for the strategy and execution of the organization’s revenue generation operations. He leads the global sales, product, partnerships, consulting, and channel functions, and drives the go-to-market strategy to achieve the company’s targets.

    Chris has served in various sales, marketing, and leadership positions in the two decades he’s been at Vertex including Vice President of Global Sales where he helped to build both an international and SaaS sales team while growing and leading the entire tax technology sales organization.

    Chris holds a B.S. in Marketing from Temple University.

  • Steve Hinckley

    Chief Operating Officer

    As Chief Operations Officer, Steve Hinckley is responsible for managing operations to achieve business goals, promote growth, and execute the company’s strategic vision. He maintains a customer-first focus in leading the areas of Corporate IT, Tax Research, and the Customer Center of Excellence (COE).

    Steve has more than 25 years of executive leadership in the creation of global supply chain strategy, enterprise resource planning platforms, corporate operations, and client delivery management. He maintains a customer-first

    Prior to joining Vertex, Steve held various leadership positions with IBM Global Business Services and the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Consulting Practice where he was a Partner in the Supply Chain & SAP Practice.

    He holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of Maryland.

  • Kate Shields

    Chief Customer Officer

    As Chief Customer Officer, Kate Shields leads 200 professionals in the area of customer experience, including customer success, account services, support, and enablement. Kate provides leadership and guidance to the organization to ensure that the customer is at the center of all strategic decisions and is focused on driving customer satisfaction, retention, and growth.

    Since joining Vertex in 2013, she has held several business and marketing leadership roles, including head of cloud line of business

    Kate holds a B.S. in Management Information Systems and an MBA with a concentration in Marketing from Saint Joseph’s University.

  • Bryan Rowland

    Vice President & General Counsel

    Bryan Rowland is Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary responsible for all general corporate, information security, and transactional matters. In addition, he is responsible for corporate governance and advises leadership on critical business priorities including privacy, business strategy, and potential new markets.

    Bryan possesses a deep knowledge of business operations, security, and compliance in technology and the software industry. Previously he was Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer, and Corporate Secretary at Checkpoint Systems, Inc.

    Bryan holds a J.D. from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law and a B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from Towson University.

  • Uwe Sydon

    Vice President, Product Management

    As Vice President of Product Management, Uwe Sydon is responsible for driving the product vision for the company, including a strategic, global product portfolio, as well as line of business management.

    Uwe has over 22 years of technology experience growing multibillion-dollar global product portfolios and platforms in the consumer and business markets.

    Before joining Vertex, he was Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer at Checkpoint Systems, Inc. and held executive leadership roles at Blackberry, Nokia Siemens Networks, and Siemens AG, Mobile Devices. Uwe has worked and lived in many locations across the globe, including Germany, where he was born, as well as Canada, Switzerland, and the U.S.

    Uwe holds over 30 patents and was awarded Inventor of the year from Siemens AG in 1998. He received his Diplom Ingenieur at the University of Wuppertal, Germany in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

  • Jeff Foucher

    Chief Marketing Officer

    Jeff Foucher is Chief Marketing Officer responsible for leading all corporate brand, communications, product marketing, and demand generation teams. His passion for combining artful storytelling and data-driven marketing have accelerated the company’s go-to-market expansion and transformational growth.

    Previously, he held senior leadership positions in corporate, product and field marketing at CA Technologies (now Broadcom). Earlier in his career, Jeff honed his marketing chops with AT&T and at advertising agencies Y&R and McCann-Erickson where his client roster included IBM, AT&T and General Motors.

    Jeff holds a B.A. in Communications from the University of Michigan.

  • David Henkin

    Chief Innovation Officer

    David is Chief Innovation Officer and leads the company’s Strategy & Innovation Board. This group’s cross-disciplined focus on our strategies, markets, technologies, ecosystems, and people is responsible for advancing strategic initiatives through the incubation and accelerated delivery of new, innovative technologies that drive global commerce.

    David has been recognized for his expertise in team leadership, people development, and relationship management. David has led the development of multiple lines of business at Vertex including the Public Cloud solution, as well as the Managed Services Outsourcing business. Prior to joining Vertex, David was Chief Operating Officer at Coates Analytics LP.

    David received an M.B.A. from Villanova University, an M.A. from the City College of New York, and a B.S. from the University of Maryland. He is a noted author and an adjunct faculty member at Villanova University School of Business and serves as a coach for senior executives who are Villanova students and alumni.

  • Venkatesh Jayaraman

    Vice President, Commercial Software Engineering

    Venkatesh Jayaraman (VJ) is the Vice President of Commercial Software Engineering responsible for providing strategic direction and technical leadership for the entire software engineering organization including user experience (UX). He is also responsible for the Agile product management organization (PMO), Cloud Operations, and Systems Automation areas of the company.

    VJ is a senior technology and software development executive with over two decades of industry experience and an extraordinary record of success in technical leadership, cross-functional product development, and software architecture. Prior to joining Vertex, VJ was in various leadership roles at Citrix Systems and Motorola where he led Agile and cloud transformation across the core engineering and product development organizations. He is experienced in Lean-Agile practices and has a proven record of building business agility while managing large scale enterprise organizations across multiple geographies.

    VJ holds a Master's degree in Engineering Management from University of Florida, Gainesville, and a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from India’s National Institute of Technology.

  • Michael Davis

    Chief Tax Strategy Officer

    Michael Davis is the Chief Tax Strategy Officer responsible for advancing the company’s business and technology strategies to enable next-generation corporate tax transformation.

    Michael joined Vertex from Nestlé USA where he had extensive experience in tax planning, compliance, audit controversy, provision, and operations, as well as tax data management.

    During his career at Nestlé, he led the team that built the first digital corporate tax department, which has been recognized for its industry-leading best practices for automation and standardization of global platforms.

    Michael holds a B.S. in finance from the University of Bridgeport and an MBA in accounting and an M.S. in tax from the University of New Haven. He is also a member of the Business Advisory Council and executive director of the Executive MBA (EMBA) program at the University of New Haven.

  • Barb Dyson

    Chief Human Resources Officer

    Barb Dyson is Chief Human Resources Officer, responsible for the development and execution of human capital strategies in support of the overall business. Barb’s focus and expertise include talent and leadership development, succession planning, and change management.

    Prior to joining Vertex, Barb spent the majority of her career in the technology industry, including Director of Human Resources at Vis.align, LLC, a consulting and outsourcing company.

    Barb holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Widener University and has achieved Senior Certified Professional in Human Resources (SHRM-SCP) certification. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and the Human Resources Council III, sponsored by the Conference Board. Barb currently serves on the Delaware County Regional Advisory Board for Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region.

  • Bernadette Pinamont

    Vice President, Tax Research

    Bernadette Pinamont is Vice President of Tax Research responsible for leading a global team of 85 tax professionals who contribute subject matter and technical expertise to build and maintain content for all products, powering millions of effective tax rate determinations for customers in over 19,000 global jurisdictions.

    Prior to joining Vertex, Bernadette was Vice President of Tax for Endo Pharmaceuticals. Bernadette's 30 plus year tax career also includes the corporate tax departments of AstraZeneca, DuPont, Syngenta, Tyco Toys, and, initially, EY. When Bernadette joined Vertex in 2013, she was a thought leader in the Chief Tax Office and engaged both industry and clients on the trends, patterns, and emerging solutions to address the global challenges associated with regulatory compliance and tax technology.

    Bernadette regularly speaks at local and industry events about tax and the importance of technology, including the annual International Tax Review’s (ITR) Women in Tax Forum. She leads the Philadelphia Women’s Tax Network and is a graduate of Seton Hall University, from which she earned both a B.S. in Accounting, Summa Cum Laude, and her Juris Doctor. Bernadette is also a licensed attorney and a CPA.

  • John Viglione

    Senior Vice President, Strategy

    As Senior Vice President of Strategy, John Viglione is responsible for the development of commercial and operational strategies, providing policy, industry, and trends analysis on issues affecting the organization, as well as business development and partner ventures.

    John has in-depth knowledge of the software industry and is active in the technology and industry analyst community associated with global technology ecosystems. John initially joined Vertex as its Chief Technology Officer and led the vision for its flagship O Series technology, known today as Vertex Indirect Tax O Series, an on-premise, private, and public cloud technology platform.

    Prior to joining Vertex, he spent more than 15 years within Fortune 500 companies, focusing on comprehensive enterprise IT initiatives.

    John is an advisory board member of Penn State’s College of Information Sciences Technology (IST) and the Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies (PACT), as well as a judge on PACT’s Enterprise Awards Committee. John earned a B.S. from St. Joseph’s University and an MBA from Penn State University. He is an author, frequent speaker, and advocate of new and emerging technologies.

  • Ben Askin

    Chief Information Officer

    Ben Askin is Chief Information Officer, responsible for enterprise technology strategy, security, data analytics, and digital transformation, using cognitive solutions and data insights across the organization to advance the delivery of value to customers.

    Ben has more than 25 years of consulting and organizational management experience with small to large enterprise-sized clients in a variety of leading industries, primarily involving business innovation, strategy, and large-scale technology enablement.

    Ben earned a B.S. in Business and Finance from the University of Maryland College Park and is also the founder of the Heroes Youth Baseball and Basketball Club, dedicated to the development of well-rounded youth through positive sports competition.

  • Lisa Butler

    Chief Accounting Officer

    Lisa Butler became Chief Accounting Officer in 2020 and leads the company’s accounting operations having previously served as Chief Financial Officer from 2015 to 2019.

    Lisa's expertise is in accounting and finance operations, including risk management and internal controls reporting. Prior to joining Vertex, Lisa was a Controller at Kenexa (now an IBM company). She started her career in assurance services at PwC serving both private and public companies.

    Lisa is a member of the Society of Professional Women (SPW), founded by the Main Line Chamber of Commerce. Lisa received a B.S. in Accounting from LaSalle University, is a Certified Public Accountant, and a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

  • Rebecca Polley

    Vice President, Global Operations

    Rebecca Polley is Vice President of Global Operations responsible for leading the company’s international go to market activities to drive growth and expansion into new regions around the world, including business development and strategic partnerships.

    Rebecca has extensive experience in business management and finance for SaaS and B2B software and services companies. Prior to joining Vertex, Rebecca held financial leadership roles in Europe with German and U.S. multinationals in the technology sector, including Vice President at SAP in Walldorf, Germany.

    Rebecca holds a B.B.A. in Accounting from Southern Methodist University. She is a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of Financial Executives International (FEI) and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).

  • Ric Andersen

    Director

    Ric Andersen joined the Vertex Board of Directors in February 2008. He has more than ten years of private equity experience and over 25 years of consulting and management experience at IBM, Price Waterhouse, and PwC Consulting. Currently, he is a partner at Peak Equity, a Philadelphia-based private equity firm focused on lower middle-market enterprise software. Prior to joining Peak, Ric was a partner at Milestone Partners, a Philadelphia-based private equity firm, he was also a managing director at Silver Lake Partners, a technology-focused private equity firm based in New York.

    During his tenures with Price Waterhouse, PwC Consulting, and IBM, Ric was a senior partner who built and managed enterprise software/ERP businesses, as well as business process outsourcing operations. He spent much of his early career leading large-scale business improvement programs for Fortune 500 companies in the technology sector, as well as other industries. Ric is currently a director on the Boards of two other privately held companies, G5 and EnterpriseDB. In addition, he serves on the Board of the publicly traded online education corporation, American Public Education Inc., as well as the Board of the Barra Foundation, a large charitable foundation. A member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Ric holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BS from Bucknell University.

  • Terrence Kyle

    Director

    Terrence Kyle joined the Vertex Board of Directors in June 2004. Terry is currently a partner with WIN Capital, LLC, a private equity group that invests in emerging growth companies from the manufacturing, technology, and service markets. As Senior Vice President and CFO of Shared Medical Systems (SMS), Terry helped take the company public in 1976 and was responsible for moving the stock from the NASDAQ Stock Market to the New York Stock Exchange in 1997. He also led the team that negotiated the sale of SMS to the Siemens Corporation in July 2000. During his 24-year career at SMS, the company grew from $35 million in revenue and more than 650 employees in the US to $1.2 billion in revenue and more than 7,500 employees spanning 22 countries.

    Terry received his B.S. in Accounting from Drexel University and is a Certified Public Accountant. He began his career with Arthur Andersen & Company and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

  • Amanda Westphal Radcliffe

    Director

    Amanda has served on the Board of Directors for Vertex Inc. since 1993. The company was founded by her father Ray Westphal in 1978, and now is co-owned by her and her siblings Jeff Westphal and Stefanie Westphal Thompson. Her “lifetime” Vertex tenure has included many operational roles, from technical software instructor and production, to middle-market product teams. Prior to joining Vertex, Amanda owned and successfully transitioned a multi-million-dollar personal care business to a national company. She also enjoyed an accomplished career at a global corporate travel management company, where she was a middle-market Managing Director.

    Amanda serves on the Nominating and Governance Committee of the Vertex Board and is passionate about excellence in private company corporate governance. Underscoring the company’s strong commitment to the community, she championed a project to implement a diversity program that includes partnering with an organization that specializes in placing talented individuals on the autism spectrum into the company’s workforce.

    She is also the shareholder steward of the company’s corporate philanthropy program. She holds a B.A. from Moravian College, attended business school at Drexel University and Executive Education at the Wharton School. Amanda serves on the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Overseers, the St. Joe’s University Kinney Center for Autism, Education and Support Advisory Board. She is Chair of the Drexel University, A.J. Drexel Autism Institute Board, and Chair Emeritus of Breastcancer.org. Amanda is also a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of Women Corporate Directors.

  • Kevin Robert

    Director

    Kevin Robert joined the Vertex Board of Directors in February 2015. Named one of the “Top 100 Most Influential People” by Accounting Today magazine, Kevin spent more than three decades at Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting, the $1.27 billion global division of the $4.6 billion company. Beginning as an Account Sales Manager in 1981 with CCH Computax, Kevin steadily progressed through leadership positions at CCH Computax and CCH Publishing before being named President and CEO of CCH Tax Compliance in 2001. Following the company’s 1995 acquisition by Wolters Kluwer, Kevin led the Tax & Accounting division’s operations in North America and Asia Pacific before being named Global CEO in 2010. During his tenure, revenue grew 11% and EBITDA increased by 66%. Kevin brings deep experience in developing and marketing leading-edge accounting, tax, and audit software and information solutions for accounting and tax professionals around the world.

    His multi-national experience includes developing business in North America, South America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim, identifying global opportunities and negotiating the acquisition of companies. Kevin holds a B.S. in Marketing from the University of New Orleans and an MBA in Management from Pepperdine University. He also serves on the Board of Epiq Software.

  • Rick Stamm

    Director

    Rick Stamm joined the Vertex Board of Directors in January of 2019. Rick has more than 40 years of experience in tax advisory, tax compliance, and tax technology services. He was a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) for 30 years, during which he served a long list of domestic and international clients and held numerous leadership positions. Over the final 12 years of his career with PwC, he was the firm’s Vice Chairman and US Tax Leader and then the PwC Network’s Vice Chairman of Global Tax. He retired from PwC in 2016. Currently, he is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Stamm Development Group LLC, a Philadelphia area real estate developer, where he is responsible for overseeing the company’s financial matters.

    Rick also handles investor and lender relations and advises on the tax and financial aspects of projects. Rick is a graduate of Lycoming College with a degree in Accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant. He is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Leventhal School of Accounting at the University of Southern California. Rick is also a member of The Union League of Philadelphia and The Philadelphia Cricket Club. He was formerly a member of the Boards of Germantown Academy and Lycoming College.

  • Stefanie Westphal Thompson

    Director

    Stefanie Westphal Thompson, co-owner of Vertex, joined the company in 1991. She is currently Treasurer and serves on the Vertex Board of Directors. Prior to joining Vertex, Stevie was a vice president at Chemical Bank (now part of Chase), where she specialized in managing the banking relationship for middle market companies, including lending and cash management.

    Stevie sat on Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Foundation Board for eight years, serving as Head of their Trustee Committee and as Vice-Chair. She also served on the Board of the Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, Pennsylvania, for 10 years, heading its Trustees Committee.

    Stevie earned an MBA in Finance from Fordham University and has dual Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering and Economics from Lafayette College. She is married with five daughters and enjoys golf, paddle tennis, bridge, travel, and is an avid Philly sports fan.

  • Jeff Westphal

    Director

    Jeff Westphal is co-owner of Vertex and serves on the Vertex Board of Directors. In 1988, he joined the company founded by his father, Ray Westphal. During his tenure, he has served as Director of Marketing, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and later as Executive Vice President. He was promoted to President in 1996 and to Chief Executive Officer in 2001. Under Jeff's stewardship, Vertex has established consulting and implementation service offerings, established European and Brazilian operations, and expanded to become the global leader in Enterprise Tax Performance solutions. During his tenure, Vertex was also awarded one of the "Top Workplaces" in the Delaware Valley and "The Best Place to Work in Pennsylvania.”

    Since its start in 1978, Vertex has grown to around 900 professionals at its headquarters in the U.S. (King of Prussia, PA) and its global offices in Europe (London), Brazil (São Paulo), Dallas, Fort Collins, Naperville, Phoenix, San Francisco, Sarasota, and Seattle. Jeff is a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), World Presidents' Organization (WPO), the Conference Board, where he currently serves as Chairman of the Middle Market Executive Council and is also a frequent speaker to business and community organizations.

    Jeff served as Chairman of the Board of Open Connections, Inc. (a not-for-profit open educational organization) for 15 years and remains a trustee. In addition, he is Co-founder with his wife, Jenifer, of Kyle's Treehouse, (kylestreehouse.org), a web-based resource for families seeking hope and guidance for the treatment of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
