Is Bottled Water Tax the New Soda Tax?

Soda tax, which is a tax designated to slow the obesity epidemic by discouraging unhealthy beverage choices, is expected to generate $1.2 million over the course of one year. Now there are talks of bottled water tax and according to a recent article, "the public should be able to recoup some of the social, ethical, and environmental costs."

In 2010, Washington state passed a bottled water tax and was repealed shortly thereafter. It produced a marked reduction in bottled water consumption.

"A 2013 study of that tax from U.C. Berkeley found that, when taxed, the average quantity of bottled water purchased in treated states drops significantly, by 6.4 percent, as compared to the untaxed control states.”
