I’ve Got My Pie on You
Whether it’s eating circular food or celebrating its mathematical significance, Pi day is surrounded by fun activities such as munching on pizza, chowing down on a warm slice of pie and even having math competitions! For some states, the amount of sales tax you pay to celebrate Pi day is different depending on where the pie is purchased.
According to Maine Revenue Services, a pie baked and sold by a restaurant, store or maker at a farmers market is taxed at 8%. Whereas pies purchased and resold are taxed at 5.5%. It’s also important to note, if a pie is prepared by the retailer and not ready for immediate consumption, but requires the customer to bake the pie, it is exempt.
Being rational is hard. Take the day off and eat a piece of pie!
