Main Line Chamber Names Vertex’s Jeff Westphal "CEO of the Year"

Jeff Westphal, Vertex President and CEO, received the Main Line Chamber of Commerce’s CEO of the Year award at the Chamber’s Celebration of Business Leadership on June 27, 2013 at The Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Malvern. The event brought together the Main Line’s business community to recognize outstanding leadership and achievement.

Westphal joined Vertex in 1988, when the company was a small provider of sales tax rate lookup services with 29 employees. He became President and CEO in 2001 and under his stewardship, Vertex has grown to more than 800 employees and expanded its solution offerings to include services and an innovative enterprise-level tax management platform,Vertex® Enterprise, which supports major global, multi-national corporations.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Main Line Chamber when you consider all of the outstanding leaders in the Delaware Valley and what they have achieved,” said Westphal. “On a personal level, I accept this on behalf of our 800 plus Vertex employees, our partners and customers, and the many influential Board members and advisors who have helped me lead Vertex throughout the past dozen years.”

Central to the growth and success of the organization, Westphal believes in a culture of excellence that enables people to do their best work and demonstrate their leadership capabilities. Vertex leaders Lois Reynolds and Steve Richard were also honored Thursday as 2013 graduates of Leadership Main Line, an intensive six-month curriculum that involves the participants in learning experiences designed to enhance the infrastructure of the Main Line. “It’s really about the people and creating an environment of respect,” said Westphal. “We have built a corporate culture that emphasizes innovation, personal growth, collaboration, trust, work-life balance and a focus on the customer. Employees who are treated with respect will pass those values on in customer interactions.” 

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Westphal is also engaged in many professional and charitable activities, including the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), World President's Organization (WPO) and the Conference Board where he has recently served as Chairman of the Middle Market Executive Council.

He is a member of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce and recently retired after 15 years as Chairman of the Board of Open Connections, Inc., a not-for-profit open education resource center. Westphal is Co-founder with his wife, Jenifer, of Kyle's Treehouse, (kylestreehouse.org), a web-based resource for families seeking hope and guidance for the treatment of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
