D.C. Council Approves Sales Tax on Yoga Classes and Gym Memberships

Whether you call it the "wellness tax",  "yoga tax", or "gym tax", D.C. council approves a sales tax of 5.75% on gym memberships and yoga classes.

The roughly $5 million it would generate yearly would be used partially to offset a package of tax cuts that could leave as much as $143 million a year in taxpayers' pockets.

The Democratic-controlled council voted 12-1 to give final approval to a $10.6 billion budget for 2015 that included a sales tax on gyms, yoga studios, and other athletic businesses, a spokesperson for Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said.

Mayor Vincent Gray, who opposes the tax, must sign the budget for it to take effect on October 1.
