What the U.S. Wayfair Ruling means for Europe

Ellen Van Daal discusses the U.S. Supreme Court ruling's impact.

Video Overview

In this World Finance video, Ellen Van Daal,  solution engineer at Vertex, discusses the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair and what it means for businesses across Europe.

  • Before the Wayfair decision, companies needed to have a physical presence in each of the states to file tax returns and pay taxes.
  • The Supreme Court ruling changed this entirely. Now, European businesses selling into the United States do have nexus, regardless of physical presence. European businesses, in other words, are facing filing requirements they didn't face before the ruling.
  • Not all states are the same. Since the decision, states are continuously implementing their own set of specific rules, something that can be difficult to keep up with. Businesses must closely monitor the states they do business in and what the thresholds are or look to automation to make sure they are staying compliant with regulation.
  • These changes in the tax landscape present new, complex challenges for European businesses. Our tax technology automates tax processes with continuously updated rates and rules.
