Get Back-to-School in Style and Tax Free - Virginia
Virginia taxpayers are reminded about the upcoming back-to-school sales tax holiday set for August 6-8, 2010. During the holiday period, sales tax does not apply to school supplies (i.e., notebooks, pencils, calculators, dictionaries, backpacks and lunch boxes) priced at $20 or less per item and clothing and footwear (i.e., jeans, shorts, dresses, raincoats, hats, sandals and sneakers) priced at $100 or less per item.
During the sales tax holiday period, retailers are also permitted to pay the sales tax themselves on any nonexempt item and pass the savings on to their customers.
The complete lists of eligible items, sales tax holiday guidelines for consumers and retailers, and a list of frequently asked questions are available on the Virginia Department of Taxation's Web site.
