Sales Tax State Activity Update - January 2009

Dual GST System to be introduced in India in April 2010

Under the new agreement both the federal government and the states will administer their own GST systems. The Central GST will be levied and collected by the Federal Government and will subsume the Central Excises and Services Taxes currently imposed at the federal level.

The State GST will be levied and collected by the States and will subsume the State Vat and the Central Sales Tax. The state level Service Tax which is expected to be levied from April 2009 is also expected to be merged with the GST.
