Georgia Senate Sets to Simplify Telecom Tax and Fees
The Senate has adopted a resolution that would create a 5 member committee that would undertake a study of the conditions, needs, issues, and problems within the communications industry and recommend any action or legislative changes.
The resolution points out that the communications industry has evolved rapidly in recent years so that consumers may choose from a wide variety of technologies and providers and that there is a wide disparity in both the taxation and licensure of various types of communication services compared to other industries.
Noting the state of Virginia recently passed legislation simplifying the structure of taxation of communications services and due to the fact that the Georgia legislature plans a major review of taxation in general, SR 482 states that "a streamlined tax and licensure climate for communications can aid economic development, help attract new jobs, help secure existing jobs, encourage investment in communications infrastructure, and minimize disincentives to such investments resulting from inequitable taxation."
Any reports or recommendations issued by the committee would be due on December 1, 2007 at which point the committee would stand abolished.
