Sales Tax State Activity Update - December 2006
Vermont Telecom and the Streamlined Sales Tax Project
Due to becoming a full member of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) beginning January 1, 2007, a number of provisions with respect to sales tax will be changing in Vermont.
Notably, some changes will affect the taxation of telecommunication services. First, the exemption for the first $20.00 of the monthly amount billed for residential local exchange telephone service is repealed. The taxability of all products and services subject to the local option tax will mirror that of state law. Therefore, telecommunications will become subject to the local option tax whereas they currently are not taxed.
