Sales Tax State Activity Update - April 2004
Electronic Filing Required Where Possible in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Department of Revenue will again this year contact tax registrants requiring that sales and use tax returns be filed electronically. Hardship waivers were granted last year for a variety of reasons. In order to eliminate those hardships the department has developed alternative methods.
Sales Internet Process
This is an Internet- based electronic filing application. It maintains a history of all your electronically filed sales and use tax returns, issues a receipt, and allows tax payment by Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT). Checks or money orders may also be used to make payments. A logon identification is required and one may be obtained at http://www.dor.state.wi.us/eserv/sip/html or by calling (608) 261-6261.
File Transmission
This electronic filing application is for taxpayers who use tax software or can create a file in XML format. Sales and use tax data can be extracted and sent using a secure transmission. The latter eliminates manual entry of data to the Sales Internet Process system. EFT payments can be submitted with the same file or in a separate transaction. For more information and a list of authorized software vendors go to http://www.dor.state.wi.us/eserv/file/index.html
Sales TeleFile
A new TeleFile system will conveniently let tax registrants file their sales and use tax returns using a touch-tone telephone. Instructions, worksheets, and payment vouchers will be mailed with letters requiring electronic filing. The latter information may also be downloaded at http:// www.dor.state.wi.us/eserv/e-sales.html.
The department will still waive the electronic filing requirement if it causes a hardship. Taxpayers will be required to request a waiver in writing and mail it to:
Secretary of Revenue, Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Mail Stop 5-77 PO Box 8946 Madison WI 53708-8946
The waiver request should make clear the hardship and should be filed after receiving the electronic filing request from the department.
