Sales, Use and International Tax Activity Update - June 2010
A Tax Commission by any Other Name…Still Manages Taxes — Mississippi
On July 1, 2010, the Mississippi Tax Commission will become the Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR).
The organization and duties of the various offices, bureaus or divisions of the current Tax Commission will not be changed. There are no address or phone number changes. The DOR will continue to administer and collect taxes, issue titles, oversee the equalization of property values, and function as the wholesaler of alcoholic beverages.
Governor Barbour has re-appointed J. Ed Morgan as the Commissioner of Revenue and he will continue to serve as the executive officer of the Department of Revenue. Last year the Mississippi Legislature passed legislation that separates certain duties of the State Tax Commission between the Department of Revenue and a newly created Board of Tax Appeals. The DOR will function and serve exactly as the Tax Commission does today, except for hearing appeals from certain actions of the agency.
The announcement can be viewed on the Mississippi Department of Revenue Web site.
