Sales Tax State Activity Update - August 2005
Iowa Institutes e-Filing
Beginning July 2005, electronic filing and payment of Iowa sales and retailer's use tax deposits and returns will be accessible online or by touch-tone telephone.
A letter has been sent by Iowa Department of Revenue (IDR) to all registered taxpayers. This letter includes a unique 8-digit Business eFile Number (BEN), which is required to gain access to the "eFile & Pay" system. It will also give detailed instructions and explain an online demonstration feature. If you received a BEN for income tax withholding the same one applies for sale and use tax filing.
Paper returns will no longer be provided, so "eFile & Pay" is the best option for filing. If you were required to pay electronically before, you must continue to do so.
The IDR states that filing and paying electronically have the following benefits:
- Access to filing and paying system 24 hours a day/7 days a week
- Access to e-filing and e-payment history 24 hours a day/7 days a week
- Instant confirmation that returns and payments are received
- Secure and confidential transmission of information
- Ability to schedule payments in advance
Note to users of the existing EFT debit option: The current EFT debit option will no longer be available. It is being replaced by ePay, which is available in the "eFile & Pay" application.
